How to choose disposable food containers

A short guide for food sellers: which containers suit hot food, cold drinks, kuih and events.

Check the plastic code on the bottom

Most plastic containers have a recycling triangle with a number inside. Number 1 is PET and number 5 is PP. The number tells you the type of plastic before you buy.

PP (number 5) — for hot food

PP containers are commonly used for rice, dishes and food that is still hot. Some PP containers are labelled microwave-safe. Always check the label on the pack before heating food in them.

PET (number 1) — for drinks and cold food

PET is clear and looks neat, suitable for cold drinks, salads, puddings and desserts. PET is not suitable for very hot food or drinks.

Paper containers and bowls

Paper bowls suit soup and noodles with broth. Paper boxes and bags suit burgers, bread and kuih. For oily or saucy food, choose paper with an inner lining.

Choose the size for the portion

For mixed-rice takeaway, square containers or compartment bento boxes keep dishes separate. For events, catering trays and large containers save time.
